Happy and Safe Celebrations

Cleveland Fire Brigade wishes communities across Cleveland a happy and safe Eid al-Fitr, the Islamic celebration held each year to mark the end of Ramadan.

It marks the end of fasting from eating and drinking and is an occasion where families come together and share meals.

Robin Turnbull, Area Manager, Protection, Prevention and Engagement, said: “It is a joyous time for many people in our local communities and we are just reminding everyone that the kitchen can be the most dangerous room in the house and to take care while cooking.

Just remember the safety rules of never leaving cooking unattended, take extra care around naked flames and ensure you test your smoke alarms regularly and have one on every floor.

To prevent accidents in the kitchen, ensure that you don’t wear loose clothing while cooking. Clothing such as scarves and long sleeves can quickly catch fire if they come into contact with a naked flame.

If you do find yourself in the alarming situation where a fire does break out during Eid celebrations, do not try to tackle it yourself. Instead, get everyone out, stay out and call the emergency services on 999.”

Fasting during the Holy month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and are the fundamental rules that worshippers must follow.  Muslims must abstain from eating and drinking from the breaking of dawn until the setting of the sun.

Naseem Mahmood, Community Safety Advocate, Cleveland Fire Brigade, said: “This is a very special time of year and a time to celebrate with our families. Ramadan for me is about spiritual rejuvenation, fasting during daylight hours and thinking about all the unfortunate people in the world. It is about giving.

Ramadan is a peaceful month, and a month of togetherness, celebration, and happiness and with that celebration we should be careful when cooking with oil and making sure we have working smoke alarms. I wish everyone a happy time, be safe and look after each other.”
