Could you be our next hero in a headset?

Cleveland Fire Brigade is calling out for people to take control of their next job.

This comes as the appeal goes out for Fire Control Operators to join the busy team at Brigade Headquarters in Hartlepool.

The heroes in headsets handle almost 16,000 emergency calls a year in the state-of-the-art control room as they respond quickly to dispatch crews, engines and equipment to where they are urgently needed and where lives may be at risk.

Control Manager Karen Hudson said: “It is a hugely rewarding role knowing that every day you are helping those in danger. No two shifts are the same as you deal with a huge variety of calls ranging from minor incidents to road traffic accidents and fires in the home.

“As a Fire Control Operator, you are the first point of contact with members of the public who need our help. You will help to keep people safe as you stay on the phone, assessing the risks and giving fire survival advice until the crew arrives.

“You will be joining a great team where you will get support, help and full training.”

Fire Control Operators need to be effective, confident communicators, remaining calm under pressure. These skills are particularly important when trying to get vital information from callers about the nature of incidents and their location, then communicating this information to firefighters.

Those interested are invited to an information session and tour of the Control Room on Monday 30 January where you hear first-hand how calls are handled and chat to current Fire Control Room Operators. You will also hear all about the recruitment and selection process.
