Setting The Safeguarding Standards

Cleveland Fire Brigade is continuing to shine a light on adults at risk of self-neglect and abuse in our communities.

It comes in support of National Adult Safeguarding Week (21 – 27 November) with the focus on organisations coming together to report any serious issues. Last year the Brigade was given the top rating by the Teeswide Safeguarding Adults Board.

The report highlighted best practice with comprehensive procedures in place for cascading and sharing information and good internal feedback mechanisms.

The Brigade encounters thousands of people every year through Safer Homes Visits and operational incidents and crews are able to highlight problems and refer them on to partner agencies for further help and support.

These can range from hoarding in the home to domestic abuse and problems with drugs and alcohol.
Robin Turnbull, Area manager, Protection, Prevention and Engagement, said: “We take our public responsibilities very seriously and this provides our communities with reassurance that we have sound arrangements in place to protect them. Ensuring people are safe is our number one priority.

We are a public service that takes pride in improving people’s lives and protecting our local communities. It is excellent to see our staff identifying and making the referrals on safeguarding issues, which can help to improve lives.”

The Teeswide Safeguarding Adults Board is the statutory body that sets the strategic direction for adult safeguarding.

Safeguarding Adults Week 2022 will focus on the theme ‘Responding to Contemporary Safeguarding Challenges’ and looks to raise the importance of safeguarding issues. It is hoped to raise awareness and enable more organisations and individuals to feel confident in recognising signs of abuse and neglect as well as recording and reporting safeguarding concerns.
