Grangetown lies predominantly in the Redcar and Cleveland area with approximately 57,000 people living in 21,400 homes. It ranges from areas of high deprivation to high quality private housing.

The area has a mixture of heavy and light industry including several Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) sites within the Wilton International Complex and Teesport corridor. Teesport sits inside the station area and is the busiest port by tonnage in the UK and processes a wide range of materials. Additionally there is a lot of arson risk from vacated commercial and domestic properties in this station’s area.

The station also has to cater for public entertainment premises, care homes, high rise buildings, farms and grass lands on the Eston Hills. It provides cover to the busy A174 Parkway road that connects east Cleveland to the rest of the region.
