Stay Safe and Register Your Appliance

Cleveland Fire Brigade is asking everyone to stay safe at home by registering their fridges, freezers, washing machines, tumble dryers and other appliances.

Registering is completely free and means manufacturers can quickly contact owners to highlight any problems. Faults can then be repaired as quickly as possible.

The reminder comes as winter arrives and energy bills escalate. Keeping white goods machines in peak condition and ensuring they are on the radar for necessary safety notifications are simple ways to make sure they last as long as possible, save money, and keep you safe.

According to Government statistics we are using more than 210 million appliances in UK homes to help us with, cleaning, laundry, washing dishes and conserving our food. Yet official research estimated that 49% of us have never registered a product, leaving some 100 million appliances untraceable, if a recall is required.

The appeal comes in support of Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliance’s (AMDEA)* Register My Appliance campaign this week which reminds appliance users to register small and large appliances, whether new, second-hand or inherited in a property move.

The campaign, which runs in International Product Safety Week, provides access to 60 leading appliance brands sold in the UK. Many manufacturers accept registration of products at least 12 years old.

Robin Turnbull, Area Manager – Protection, Prevention and Engagement, said: “These are tough times so it is vital you look after your domestic appliances and make sure they are safe. Registration applies to new purchases, pre-used buys or products passed on by family or friends. The service is free and means you will be informed if ever a safety repair or recall is needed. You don’t even need proof of purchase so you can register if you bought second-hand or were given the machine.”

Those who live in rented homes or provide housing association accommodation are also recommended to ensure all their appliances are registered.
