Update on Incident: Tees Rep Biomass Power Station

Friday 19 November 2021

Statement on Incident at Tees Rep Biomass Power Station from MGT Teesside:

The situation on site has remained stable for 48 hours. It has now moved from Emergency Response to a site issue. The site is in a recovery status which will be managed by the risk management team at MGT who will be monitoring the situation 24/7. The water shield installed yesterday has successfully reduced smoke and odour from the silo and that water shield will continue to be employed.

We would extend our thanks to Cleveland Fire Brigade and other agencies and our neighbours for their continuing advice and support.

MGT confirmed that the issue with smouldering in one of their silo’s will be managed via a controlled burn which will take several days and will be continually monitored. Cleveland Fire Brigade remain on site as protective stand-by and a multi-agency strategic group is managing the incident.

A water shield has been put up around the silo to minimise the impact of smoke to nearby residents and businesses and we expect to see a significant reduction of smoke and odour over the next few hours and days.

We advise all residents and businesses in the area to keep doors and windows closed and minimise time spent outside whilst smoke and odour remain in the area. If windows are closed in workplaces to remain COVID-19 secure businesses should be mindful of the importance of social distancing and consider wearing face masks in communal areas as closed windows will reduce the benefits of ventilation. Workplaces should consider alternatives such as working remotely if other mitigations are not possible. If you have a pre-existing health condition such as asthma carry your medication and if you feel unwell seek medical advice either from NHS 111 or calling your GP.

We are continuing to deal with an ongoing incident at Tees Rep Biomass Power Station, Tees Dock Road in Grangetown.  There is an issue with one of the silos containing wood pellets which we are monitoring 24/7 as a precaution, alongside staff from the site and strategic partners.  The nature of the issue means we will remain on site for some time, we will provide regular updates.

We will be putting plans in place to mitigate smoke, however there will be smoke in the area for the foreseeable future. We advise all residents and businesses in the area to keep doors and windows closed and minimise time spent outside, as the wind direction changes this may affect other areas.
