Cleveland Fire Brigade Enhances Firefighter Safety with Rollout of New Breathing Apparatus

Firefighters wearing high-visibility helmets and full breathing apparatus work in a smoke-filled, fire-damaged building. One firefighter uses a thermal imaging camera while another operates a hose to extinguish remaining hotspots.

Cleveland Fire Brigade is proud to announce the successful implementation of its new state-of-the-art Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) from Mine Safety Appliances (MSA), marking a major step forward in firefighter safety and operational capability.

This significant investment, delivered as part of the Brigade’s long-term Asset Management Plan, demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the health, safety, and wellbeing of our staff. The advanced SCBA equipment features cutting-edge technology designed to enhance both safety and performance. Key improvements include:

  • Enhanced hygiene – through full wet-cleaning capability, helping reduce contamination risks
  • Telemetry integration – enabling real-time monitoring of wearer conditions such as breathing rate and intensity
  • User login capability – allowing personalised usage tracking for better accountability and data-led insights

The new equipment has already been deployed across a range of operational settings, including large-scale incidents, and has received excellent feedback from firefighters on the operational ground.

As part of this transition, our previously used, yet fully functional SCBA sets have been donated to Fire Aid, a charity that distributes essential firefighting equipment to communities in need all over the world.

Closer to home, surplus kit has also found a valuable second life. Two unused BA boards were recently donated to Social Training 4U, an organisation that supports families affected by autism. Run by a former firefighter, the group uses the boards in team-building activities, including their hands-on ‘Duck Rescue’ scenario.

We extend our sincere thanks to all staff and partners involved in the rollout. From front-line crews and support teams to the on-site MSA representatives, your professionalism and collaboration ensured a seamless transition with no disruption to fire cover.

This successful rollout is a testament to the dedication and adaptability of our workforce and to the positive impact that innovative equipment and strong partnerships can have on both our operations and our communities.
