Cleveland Fire Brigade is celebrating its inspirational and diverse workforce this International Women’s Day.

On Friday 8th March, the Brigade is marking International Women’s Day and recognising its remarkable women who contribute to making the Fire Brigade one of the leading UK Fire and Rescue Services.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #InspireInclusion and the campaign hopes to create a gender equal world, free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. The day also coincides within National Careers Week (04th – 10th) which is a timely reminder of the rewarding career that women can pursue within the Brigade.

The Brigade, a keen promoter of equality, diversity, and inclusivity in the workforce employs 112 women in roles across all its areas and departments.

“On International Women’s Day, we take pride in recognising the inspirational women within our Brigade who all play a crucial role in protecting our local communities. Whether it’s our dedicated staff in the Control Room, those excelling in Communications, ICT, HR, Finance, Workshops, Admin, Risk and Performance and Fire Engineering, or of course our female Firefighters, who are pivotal to helping us continue to break down the barriers in what was historically regarded as a male-dominated profession.” Says Chief Fire Officer, Ian Hayton.

One of the Brigade’s many female Firefighters is Niki Taylor of Thornaby Green Watch who joined the Fire Brigade in 2021 after she wanted a change in career.

“I joined the Fire Brigade in 2021 after wanting a complete career change. Since joining I have had opportunities that I wouldn’t have imagined happening. Every day is different, and every day is a chance to learn something new. The role itself is very rewarding and the encouragement and support from your peers is motivational. There is always something to get involved with and endless chances to better yourself.”  Explained Niki Taylor.
