Make fire safety one of your 2024 New Year’s resolutions

Cleveland Fire Brigade is urging its communities to make 2024 a safe, happy and healthy one by putting fire safety at the top of their New Year’s Resolution list.

By adding a couple of simple checks to your daily, weekly or even monthly routine could make the difference between life and death. Ensuring you have a working smoke alarm on each level of your home and checking them weekly would be a great start.

Robin Turnbull, Area Manager, Prevention, Protection and Engagement at Cleveland Fire Brigade said, “Happy New Year to everyone! We’d like everyone to make fire safety their goal in 2024. Last year (April 2022 – March 2023) we attended 214 accidental house fires across Cleveland, many of which could have easily been prevented. These fires cause destruction not only to property but also to life.”

“Why not start 2024 by completing our Safer Homes Check online where you can answer some simple questions that will help you spot fire risks as you go around your home. The tool will offer tips and advice on the steps you can take to reduce those risks. At the end, you will receive a personalised fire safety action plan to help keep you and your household safe from fire. All from the comfort of your sofa.”

The main checks you can carry out in your home to put fire safety first are:

  • Have working smoke alarms on each level of your home – test them weekly
  • Carry out a Safer Homes Check
  • Have an escape plan in case of a fire
  • Keep all escape routes clear
  • Close all internal doors to slow the spread of fire
  • Don’t leave devices, vapes and mobile phones on charge overnight or when out
  • Don’t overload sockets
  • Ensure cigarettes are properly extinguished
  • Only put rubbish out on the day of your bin collection
  • In the event of a fire: Get Out, Stay Out and Call 999.

By having these precautions in place, you will minimise the chances of a fire in your home and have a safer 2024.
