With Halloween festivities just around the corner, Cleveland Fire Brigade is warning people of the potential fire risks associated with Halloween costumes.
Many Halloween costumes are highly flammable and can easily catch fire if they come into contact with an open flame. This can be especially dangerous for children who may not be aware of the risks.
Robin Turnbull, Area Manager, Prevention, Protection and Engagement at Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “Halloween is scary enough without a trip to A&E. We want everyone to enjoy the spookiest day of the year but to do so safely and follow our advice to avoid putting themselves in ‘spooktacular danger’.
If you’re shopping for a Halloween costume for yourself or your child, make sure to read the label and check that the fabric is non-flammable and keep costumes away from naked flames such as candles or jack-o-lanterns.”
He also encourages people to use much safer LED lights inside of pumpkins instead of open flame candles.
Robin Turnbull goes on to say “it’s so important to teach your child the ‘stop, drop and roll’ method in case their costume catches fire.”
With many people decorating their house with Halloween decorations it’s important to remember to keep exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.”
