Camping and Caravanning in Safety

Caravanners and campers should also be pitching fire safety when they set-up on site this summer.

Robin Turnbull, Area Manager, Prevention, Protection and Engagement, Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “It is tempting to switch to holiday mode and relax the rules when you are getting ready to take out the tent or get the caravan back on the road.

“A change of activity can bring its own hazards and risks and it is important you also pack some simple fire prevention measures to ensure you enjoy the great outdoors and have a great summer.

“Simple things like having at least six metres spacing between tents or caravans, not smoking inside or using candles and being careful when cooking, can all help put the great in your adventure and make it an enjoyable one. You should also fit and test a smoke alarm in your caravan”.

“Also make sure the area outside your tent or caravan is clear from any rubbish, you have a torch handy, and make sure everyone knows the on-site fire safety rules in the event of an emergency.

“Cooking appliances should be kept away from tent walls, never cook inside a small tent or near flammable materials or long grass. Make sure the caravan is ventilated, and never block air vents, to avoid a build-up of carbon monoxide.

If you are using gas cylinders:

  • Keep them away from children.
  • Make sure they are completely empty before changing.
  • Store well away from caravans, tens and vehicles
  • Check gas pipe connection is secure. If you suspect a leak, turn off the main cylinder immediately.
