Driving Down the Number of Road Deaths

Cleveland Fire Brigade is encouraging people to take extra care on the roads as part of a national drive to reduce the number of UK road deaths to zero.

It comes in support of #ProjectEDWARD (Every Day Without A Road Death) the annual UK-wide road safety campaign which runs this month from (15/05-19/05).

Our statistics show that between April 2022 and March 2023, 192 people were seriously injured in Road Traffic Collisions and tragically 11 people lost their lives on the roads in Cleveland.

The theme for #ProjectEDWARD 2023 is Safer Mobility, Everyone’s Responsibility and it is backed by the government, emergency services, highways agencies, road safety organisations, and private industry and throughout its week of action together they will promote safety on our roads.

The campaign aims to promote an evidence-led, ‘safe system’ approach – the long-term objective of which is a road traffic system free from death and serious injury.

Andrew Bright, Cleveland Fire Brigade’s Learn and Live Coordinator says;

Despite the fact the UK has some of the safest roads in the world there is still a considerable amount of work to be done to drive down the level of incidents resulting in preventable injury or loss of life. Project EDWARD helps profile initiatives and innovation taking place and reaches out to all road users who can play their part through their day to day travel interactions.

The focus during the #ProjectEDWARD week of action is to work together through our partnerships and with our communities to help minimise the risks for road users and cut the number of road deaths to zero. Although the campaign runs for a week the focus on road safety is 365 days of the year to meet the challenge of Every Day Without A Road Death”.

Each day the campaign will focus on a different key theme around road safety:

  • Day 1: Monday 15th May – Safe Roads
  • Day 2: Tuesday 16th May – Safe Vehicles
  • Day 3: Wednesday 17th May – Safe Speeds
  • Day 4: Thursday 18th May – Safe Road Users
  • Day 5: Friday 19th May – Post-Crash Response
