It is your chance to make a difference in the community and get your foot on the firefighter’s career ladder as Cleveland Fire Brigade is looking for new recruits.

The formal application process opens on December 5 and will be open for five days. Applicants must be 18 or over when training starts in June 2023.

Chief Fire Officer Ian Hayton said: “This is a huge opportunity to join one of the most successful fire and rescue services in the country and have a key part in keeping your local community safe.

“The role of the modern-day firefighter is vast and varied. It is not just about fighting fires and attending road traffic accidents. We place a high emphasis on prevention and spend a lot of time visiting homes and businesses and delivering fire safety advice.

We are looking for people, who among other attributes, can work under pressure, at heights, be part of a close-knit team, be reliable and committed to keeping fit.”

Victoria Henderson, a firefighter at Redcar Community Fire Station, said: “It is a fantastic job and I love every minute. The variety is also very appealing. I come into work every day not knowing what I will be faced with. It could be anything from house fires, road traffic accidents to educating children in schools. All in all being a firefighter is a great job. I have always been accepted, supported, and had the chance to learn new skills. It is a challenging but very rewarding career.”

Those applying to be a firefighter must live within the Cleveland Fire Authority area, be eligible to work in the UK and have a good all-round level of fitness.

Successful applicants will have to undergo a series of physical assessments, psychometric tests, and interviews before being accepted for training.

Sanjay Ramdhan, a Crew Manager at Hartlepool Community Fire Station, said: “I joined the Fire Brigade in February 2007 because I wanted to do a job where I would have job satisfaction and do different things every day. I also knew that as a Firefighter I would be able to make a positive difference to people’s lives. Every day I am faced with new challenges, no two shifts are the same. I have made many friends with completely different backgrounds to me. The opportunities I have had at Cleveland Fire Brigade are brilliant. As well as all the training I have received.”
