Candle with Care

A pair of hands carrying a lit candle

Handle your candles with care is the safety message from Cleveland Fire Brigade as many of us are tempted to create a cosy atmosphere at home during the long dark nights or even use them to stay warm as energy bills continue to rise.

An open flame, if left unattended or knocked over, can spark a serious fire within minutes.

Robin Turnbull, Area Manager, Protection, Prevention and Engagement, said: “With winter fast approaching, a few candles scattered around the room can lend a warm glow to an evening or add some festive cheer to the season’s celebrations. But they are certainly a potential fire risk and must be treated with the utmost care.

“It is important to remember that a candle is not just a decorative feature. Left unattended, an open flame scenting your home could leave a trail of devastation. Place your lit candles with extra care, away from curtains, pets and children and always remember to put them out when you leave the room, even for a moment.”

The warnings come in support of National Candle Fire Safety Week (24 – 30 October.)

The simple safety rules for candles, tea lights and scented candles include:

  • Fire resistant holders – always place candles and tea lights in a suitable candleholder
  • Place on flat, stable surfaces – and ensure the surface is heat resistant
  • Keep away from fabric – such as curtains, furniture, and anything else that could catch fire
  • Never place under shelves – or other enclosed spaces
  • Keep away from children & pets – store candles, tea lights, matches and lighters safely
  • Put candles out – before going out or to bed, use a snuffer or metal spoon to avoid sparks
  • Leave candles to cool – before trying to move them
  • Never leave lit candles or tea lights unattended – or alone with children or pets
  • Don’t move or carry lit candles – use a torch or LED candle to light your way
  • Look for safer alternatives – such as LED candles and lights, battery, or wind-up torches

Cleveland Fire Brigade is supporting the National Fire Chief Council’s ‘Stay Fire Safe’ campaign to provide advice and support to the public to help reduce the risk of fire in the home.

It comes in response to the cost-of-living crisis hitting a record high and people looking at unconventional and potentially dangerous ways of heating and lighting their homes, including the use of candles.

“Due to rising energy costs, we are also expecting an increase in the use of candles used for lighting which can significantly increase fire risk. If you are in the situation where you must use candles for light, we are advising people to ensure they use fire resistant holders and place them out of the way of materials that may catch fire such as curtains. It is much safer to look out for brighter and safer alternatives to light your home such as LED candles and lights or battery or wind-up torches.” Continued Robin Turnbull.
