Introduction
As a Firefighter, you will be called upon to tackle various emergency situation, incidents vary from tackling fires and rescuing people from burning buildings to dealing with chemical spillages and Road Traffic Collisions. Today’s Firefighter also works closely with the community to increase their level of awareness and to help prevent incidents from occurring in the first place.
You will need a range of skills including:
- problem solving skills and initiative are vital to resolve issues quickly and calmly
- a sensitive approach when dealing with members of the public, who may be distressed and confused
- effective communications skills are vital not only to communicate with your colleagues, but when working with the public, schools and community groups
- commitment to, and understanding of equality and diversity and treating everyone with dignity and respect
