Hob Hazards: Top Causes of House Fires Revealed

Cleveland Fire Brigade is urging residents to take extra care in the kitchen following a concerning number of cooking-related house fires throughout May 2025.

Fire crews responded to 13 kitchen fires during the month, many of which were caused by unsafe cooking practices, a stark reminder of staying vigilant in the kitchen.

One particularly dangerous trend continues to raise alarm: placing air fryers and other kitchen appliances directly onto electric hobs. Even when switched off, hobs can retain heat or be accidentally turned on, turning everyday appliances into serious fire hazards.

Other incidents were sparked by flammable items left near hobs, electrical faults, and smoking indoors – all of which highlight the dangers of cluttered cooking spaces and a lack of attention in the kitchen.

Lee Brown, Assistant Director of Prevention, Protection and Planning at Cleveland Fire Brigade said: ” Cooking is something we all do every day, but it remains one of the leading causes of house fires. Just a moment of distraction – stepping away from the hob or leaving something nearby – can have devastating consequences. The reality is most of these fires are preventable. Don’t let dinner turn into danger.”

Top Tips to Stay Safe in the Kitchen:

  • Keep flammable items like tea towels, paper towels, and packaging well away from hobs – even when they’re switched off
  • Make sure appliances like air fryers and toasters are on a flat surface, away from ovens, hobs, or anything hot, as they can overheat or catch fire.
  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking – don’t get distracted by phones, visitors, or other tasks.
  • Ensure working smoke alarms are fitted on every level of your home – and test them weekly.
  • Dispose of smoking materials safely and ensure they are fully extinguished.
  • Avoid overloading plug sockets and never leave devices charging overnight.
  • Always switch off ovens, hobs, and grills after use.
