Cleveland Fire Brigade is recruiting On-Call Firefighters. These opportunities provide the chance to gain transferable skills and qualifications, build your confidence and experience, give back to your community and maintain or improve your fitness.
On-Call Firefighters come from a cross-section of the community and MUST be able to respond and arrive to their nearest on-call fire station within five minutes. The role can be done alongside primary employment or around other commitments.
Those interested in helping keep their local communities safe can drop-in on drill nights at all our stations from 14 September. This will give potential candidates the opportunity to chat to on-call firefighters about their role and take part in some drill night activities.
For those who can’t make a session in person we are also offering Facebook live drop-in for drill night sessions where you will be able to find out more about the role from our firefighters and we will also bust some myths about firefighting opportunities for women.
We are looking for around 30 On-call Firefighters and applications are particularly welcomed for Yarm and the Headland Fire stations.
Sessions must be booked – contact Steve McCallister on 07802699765.
Please wear face covering and please do not attend if you or anyone in your household has Covid-19 symptoms.

Carl Boasman, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, said: “Being an On-Call Firefighter is a valuable role within the community and we are looking for people from all backgrounds and age groups. Responding to emergencies and delivering safety advice and education is exciting and rewarding. The role offers satisfaction and respect that comes with working as part of a team and providing a vital service to your local community.
“On-Call Firefighters are paid to attend incidents and weekly training sessions. We offer an annual retaining fee, plus hourly rates paid when firefighters attend incidents or training as well as disturbance fees and the opportunity to learn new skills such as teamwork, firefighting, first aid, road traffic collision procedures and fire safety.”
To apply you need to be at least 18 years of age with a good all round level of fitness. No previous experience is required as full training is given. On-call Firefighters provide an on-call service to respond to emergency calls in the same way as full-time firefighters. The same fire engines and equipment are used but you are on-call rather than being based at the station.
Cleveland Fire Brigade employs people from a range of diverse backgrounds in our fire fighting roles. We regard ourselves as an inclusive employer who promotes equality and values diversity and we welcome applications from women, members of the LGBTQ+ community and those from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.
