Search is on for on-call firefighters

Retained recriuitment open day poster jan 2014.inddCLEVELAND Fire Brigade is holding an open day on Thursday 22 January to help recruit on-call (retained) firefighters to its Stockton station.

New recruits are required for Stockton Fire Station in South Road, Norton and can find out more during the open day at the station which is being held from 11am to 7pm.

Retained firefighters are members of the community who are paid to provide an on-call service responding to emergency calls in the same way as whole-time firefighters, using the same appliances and equipment, but who are ‘on call’ rather than at a fire station.

Applicants must meet a number of criteria. This includes living/working within five minutes of Stockton Fire Station and being able to respond and report to the station within that time, being at least 18 years old when training commences and having a good all round level of fitness.

Simon Weastell, Retained Station Manager with Cleveland Fire Brigade, said: “Retained firefighters are a very important part of our fire and rescue service and we are currently seeking new recruits for Stockton Fire Station.

“The role of an on call firefighter presents a great opportunity for people to serve their local community, learn new skills and gain confidence. Retained firefighters come from various different backgrounds; to some, the flexible working appeals, others have spare time on their hands and want to do something meaningful, whilst for the unemployed, it provides vital income and enhances their job prospects.

“In return, along with remuneration, the Brigade equips firefighters with all of the necessary skills needed for them to undertake the role and they will receive further training throughout their career to ensure they are kept up to date with the latest technology and equipment..

“When people come along to the open day they will be able to chat informally to us about exactly what’s involved and expected. They’ll be able to try out some of the equipment they would be expected to use such as wearing fire kit and Breathing Apparatus, using hose and also talking to existing retained firefighters.

“I hope that local people do take the opportunity to drop-in to the open day to find out more and see whether the role is suited to them.
