Make your workplace safer

All work places and most other non-domestic premises have legal duties to keep people safe. As an employer you should ensure your staff know how to prevent fires in the workplace and how to escape if a fire does break out.

Know the law

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, 2005 (RRO) was introduced by the government in 2006. The changes were designed to make the law easier to comply with and understand. You also need to know about how we enforce legislation. The government has provided guidance documents to help (see links below).

Inform us of any serious risks

If you’re concerned about a fire risk which may be a danger to life (for instance a company or organisation disregarding fire safety practices) you should contact our team immediately. These risks may have serious implications and are dealt with quickly and in confidence by us. A ‘risk to life’ could include any dangerous practices, for example, blocked corridors or locked fire exits.

If you need to inform us of any serious risks please contact our Fire Engineering Department on: 01429 874109 (during office hours) or 01429 874060 (out of hours) email: fireengineeringhelpdesk@clevelandfire.gov.uk

Fit sprinklers (or fire suppression systems)

There is clear evidence that sprinklers can be effective in stopping fires spreading and reducing the intensity of the fire. Fire sprinkler systems are the only devices able to detect a fire in a home or business then control and attempt to extinguish. Damage from fire and water is minimal, as are installation costs.

Fire Safety Advice

We have a legal duty to provide fire safety advice and will support you in meeting your statutory obligations. This is aligned to our objective of promoting business. Our enforcement officers adhere to the Regulators Code and work with partners such as Better Business For All to provide support and advice.
