Around half of all deaths caused by fires in the home happen between 10pm and 8am. Follow our simple bedtime routine to help you reduce risks and keep your family safe.

Every night make sure to:

  • Close all internal doors – this can slow down the spread of fire
  • Turn off and unplug electrical appliances – unless designed to leave on e.g. fridge
  • Check your cooker – make sure the grill, hobs and oven are all turned off
  • Don’t leave appliances on – like the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher
  • Turn heaters off – put a guard in front of an open fire
  • Check candles are out – they can go on smouldering and start a fire
  • Put cigarettes right out – make sure cigarettes and other smoking materials are out
  • Check your escape route – it should be clear of obstacles
  • Keep keys handy – for doors and windows, where everyone can find them
  • Turn off – portable heaters or electric blankets
