This personal development course for 16 to 25 year-olds and re-engages young people, helps them think about their futures and, in many cases, changes their lives.
Our full-time 12 week course offers a group, of up to 15 young adults to form a team and work together and carry out a range of tasks to benefit their local communities. It gives the opportunity for the members of the team to recognise their own learning and gain a nationally recognised qualification.
The team brings together a diverse mix of people from many different backgrounds, but focuses on those who need our help the most, particularly:
- educational underachievers
- offenders and ex-offenders
- unemployed young people
- young people in, or leaving care
A trained Team Leader guides the Team through a varied programme of activities, including a team building residential, a community project, a work placement, a team challenge and work on future plans, job searches, CV’s etc.
Steven Badham, 17, was a Team member and cannot praise the programme enough
“I have so much to thank the Team for, I have made many new friends and gained a great deal of experience and confidence’
Steven thinks the 12 weeks spent with the Prince’s Trust will stand him in good stead in his future which, all going well, will be in the armed forces.
“The Army have given me a provisional start date to join up for frontline combat and many of the activities carried out with the Team and the skills I picked up have helped me to get a step nearer to my chosen career.”
Steven enjoyed a two week work placement at a local garage and the owner gave glowing feedback on Steven’s punctuality, attendance and commitment.
Since leaving the Team, Steven went straight on to an apprenticeship with the Local Authority and hopes to join the Army in the New Year.
For socially excluded people the benefits are great:
- Nationally 70% of unemployed team members go on to a job, education or training within three months of completing.
- Team members are given the self-esteem, confidence and motivation to achieve results.
- a City & Guilds Certificate in Personal, Teamwork and Community skills
Young people who claim benefits are usually able to continue claiming whilst taking part in the Team programme.
The Princes’ Trust Team run in partnership with Cleveland Fire Brigade also offers the chance to take part in several fire service activities and participants will also gain a Fire Awareness and First Aid Certificate.
