Cleveland Fire Authority appoints new Chair

Councillor Jean O'Donnell

Councillor Jean O'Donnell has been appointed Chair of Cleveland Fire Authority.

Councillor O’ Donnell, who represents the Billingham South ward in Stockton for Labour, has served on Cleveland Fire Authority for eight years and replaces Councillor Peter Porley who steps down after two years at the helm.

She was officially voted into the post by her fellow Fire Authority Members at the annual meeting on Friday 4 June. The Chair typically serves for two years. The Vice Chair of the Authority is Councillor Robbie Payne of Hartlepool Borough Council.

The work of Cleveland Fire Authority encompasses working closely with Cleveland Fire Brigade to ensure that the people of Teesside receive the best possible fire and rescue service.

Councillor O’ Donnell, who has been in local politics for 20 years, said:

“This is a tremendous honour and I am extremely pleased to be able to continue the excellent work of good people like my predecessor Councillor Porley. The future financial picture of public sector finance will clearly present Fire and Rescue Authorities with some significant challenges in the years ahead. Members will continue to work with officers to deliver the unique, professional Fire Brigade that the people of Teesside have come to expect and rely on.

“The Authority will also build on its fantastic work with partners to continue to truly make a positive difference to every local citizen’s safety and quality of life.

“I am privileged to have been appointed Chair of this Authority.”

Chief Fire Officer, Ian Hayton said: “I am very pleased to welcome Councillor O Donnell as Chair of Cleveland Fire Authority; her extensive experience as a politician with both Stockton Borough Council and the Authority will assist her in leading and managing the expected future financial challenges.”
