The main purpose of the job is to save life, protect property from damage by fire and from firefighting measures and to render humanitarian service.

In effect this will involve educating the community in fire safety awareness and advice; and emergency situations ranging from rubbish fires and house fires through to prolonged incidents involving large commercial or industrial premises; salvage operations; rescue of persons or animals from perilous situations such as cliffs, water courses or mine shafts; attendance at a whole range of road traffic accidents from merely making vehicles safe to multi-vehicle crashes. In fact, consider most scenarios involving risk to people or property and undoubtedly, the Fire Brigade will be there.

Other duties vary from the routine maintenance of the station, equipment and appliances; the inspection of fire hydrants, high risk hazards and properties and regular fire safety inspections.

A modern firefighter therefore, not only needs a high degree of physical fitness and stamina, but also needs to be adaptable. Additionally they need to demonstrate the ability to cope in conditions which could be both mentally and physically harrowing.

As front line staff, operational firefighters will also be expected to promote the professional image of the service within the community.
