Equality & Diversity

Picture of a fire appliance with local residents in Whatever it Takes area of Middlesbrough.

We work in an increasingly complex and diverse community here in Teesside.

Our overall population is growing, we're more ethnically diverse than we have ever been, and our population is getting older.

New patterns of migration have enriched local   communities providing challenges to the way we deliver our services.

Whilst national equality legislation has helped to challenge much discrimination and prejudice, there are still big gaps in equality and diversity.

Cleveland Fire Brigade, along with our  partners, are challenging inequality to ensure everyone in the Teesside area has an equal chance in life as well as access to all our services.

An example is our initiative called "Whatever it Takes" which  targets social deprivation across key wards in each local authority area.

What we are doing to improve equality and diversity

Information will be published about some of the work we are doing to improve how our worforce and the Fire Brigade's fit to our diverse community.

We are currently working to increase the number of female firefighters in the Brigade, as well as improve the numbers of ethnic minority recruits amongst operational and corporate staff.

Our Single Equality Scheme incorporates all the responsibilities that we must meet as both an employer and service provider. The document details how we respond to new legislation, review our performance, meet our ambitions and the changing needs of our developing communities.

Our Single Equality Scheme is currently under review. For more information please contact 01429 874120.
