Cleveland Fire Brigade employs a team of Fire Safety specialists - Advocates, who are based at Headquarters in Hartlepool and whose aim is to reduce the risk of fire for vulnerable people.
 
The objectives of the Advocates team are to ensure that every resident in Cleveland has the same access to the services Cleveland Fire Brigade offers to reduce the risks from fire.
 
Laura McQuillan is the Deaf Persons Advocate for Cleveland Fire Brigade and is profoundly deaf, using British Sign Language (BSL) to communicate. 
 
She joined the service in July 2006 and her aim is to ensure that profoundly deaf people can access services from Cleveland Fire Brigade.
 
She works in partnership with deaf clubs and members of the deaf community and produces resources in BSL and with subtitles to make sure that deaf people can information about fire safety in the home.

In an emergency, we need as much information on where it is and what it is to help us send help fast.
 
  1. Address/location of emergency. Examples:
    1. House number, street name, town = 7 Dawn Road, Mbro
    2. Or road name, town, nearby shop, pub, church etc. = Romford Road Hpool rear of pub
    3. Or main road name, direction and nearest exit = A19 north just after A66
 
  1. What the emergency is. Examples:
    1. What is on fire = house, kitchen, car on road, car in field, rubbish outside, grass
    2. Or if someone is trapped = car accident, trapped in lift
    3. Or any dangerous situations = fuel on roadway

If texting, remember to always leave your phone on and check if for the reply (within 2 minutes of us receiving your text) – you may also be asked more questions.
 
IMPORTANT = The SMS texting service can't guarantee your text will be delivered straight away so you must continue to use other ways of reporting the emergency such as typetalk or asking someone to phone.

CFB staff will then contact you to arrange a suitable time and date for us to visit your home, provide and/or assess for fire safety equipment and discuss escape plans with you.
 
The Home Fire Safety Visit service is FREE of charge and is available to every home in the districts of Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton.
