If a fire occurs in your home, your chances of survival will depend on how quickly and safely you are able to get out. People with mobility or learning difficulties need special attention when it comes to fire safety.
Our community safety advocates work closely with organisations and community groups in the disabled community to ensure everyone is aware of the services we offer.
Our advocates give advice on an efficient means of escape on the event of a fire and risk assess homes to see if any specialist devices are needed including:
-
vibrating or flashing smoke alarms
-
emergency call or alarms systems to summon the help
More importantly they give simple practical advice for preventing a fire occuring in the first place, particularly in the case of people with learning difficulties.
Community fire safety advocates provide a personal and low-key approach and take the time to ensure people with learning difficulties fully understand the danger of fire.
A "Safety at Home" short film and brochure have been produced aimed at those with learning difficulties who live independently. It highlights fire hazards in the home and gives tips on making your home a safe place to live.
