How You Can Help
IN AN EMERGENCY ALWAYS DIAL 999

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

Helping you to act safety will ultimately help us to save lives and also reduce service demands and costs for everyone. Here are some basic tips which can help in the event of you becoming trapped, or caught up in an incident or fire. DIAL 999
  • You do not need any money, even in a public call box.
  • Pick up the receiver - listen for the dialling tone.
  • Dial 999 and wait for an answer.  The operator will say "Emergency, which service please?"
  • Ask for the fire brigade, the operator will put you through.
  • Be calm and don't panic- give your location and say what has happened.

SMOKE ALARMS

Smoke alarms are small devices that are fitted to the ceiling and are able to detect fires in their earliest stages and sound a loud warning.

DOES YOUR HOME HAVE ONE?

  • If not, you can contact us for your FREE Home Fire Safety Visit
  • Once a week: Check the battery by pressing the button.
  • Once a year: Change the battery in the alarm, (at least) make a note of the date it was last changed and carefully vacuum the inside of the alarm to make sure that dust isn't blocking the sensor chamber. A good reminder is when you put your clocks forward or back "Change your clock, change your battery".

WHEN YOU HEAR A SIREN
What do you do?
Are you in the way?
Where do you go?

DONT PANIC
  • When you hear an emergency vehicle, keep driving until you see a place where you can pull off the carriageway safely.
  • Always indicate your intentions.
  • Wait, look and listen after the the fire emengency vehicle has passed: there may be others.
  • If you're in the right hand lane, pull in to that side of the road to give the emergency vehicle more room to use your lane if necessary.

REMEMBER:

Although firefighters need to get to incidents quickly, getting there safely is most important.
