Dealing With a Chip Pan Fire

It is preferable to have a deep fat fryer rather than a chip pan, however, if you do have a chip pan never fill it more than a third full with oil and never leave it unattended for even a minute.

If you are unlucky enough to have a chip pan fire, there are some very important rules to follow:

  • Firstly, try to remain calm
  • Turn off gas/electric immeadiately
  • Take a Fire Blanket (if you do not have a fire blanket take an ordinary tea towel, run it under cold water and then ring it out), with both hands take hold of each corner of the blanket/tea towel and turn the corners over so that they completely cover your hands.

  • With your hands and face protected by the blanket/tea towel, approach the fire by keeping low and when safe to do so lay the blanket/tea towel over the chip pan ensuring the whole of the surface of the pan has been covered.
  • Leave to cool for 30 minutes, then carefully remove the pan to an outside area.
