Youth involvement

When it comes to working with children and young people we find our reputation and standing in the community means we be a strong postive influence in their lives. This is a responsibility we take seriously.

Beyond our core work of communicating fire and road safety messages, we help young people develop key life skills. Our initiatives include promoting educational achievement in schools through team building and communication skills as part of out youth programs.

Some of the activities we are currently involved in:

Community Education in schools

Life Intervention Fire Education (LIFE)

This is one of a range of specially tailored courses to give opportunities to young people within the Cleveland Fire Brigade Area. It's designed to challenge and think about their behaviour and learn new skills from our personnel.

Young Firefighter's Association

Allows young people develop personal and social skills. It ranges from the opportunity to learn basic firefighting techniques through to residential outward bound activities.

Safety Awareness Fire Education (SAFE)

This is a six week program similiar to LIFE, but SAFE is more adaptable for special interest and special needs groups.

Prince's Trust

Is a prestigious 12 week programme of personal development for 16-25 year olds delivered in conjunction with the Prince's Trust.

Community Fire Cadets

Part of an alternative curriculum strategy for students who may struggle acaedemically in schools.

Fire Team

Is run for 18-25 year olds nominated by the Probabation Service. The course is based on the LIFE course and seeks to develop similiar skills and increase knowledge of home fire safety and road safety.

Play with a Football not with Fire

Football loving young people are coached in football skills by firefighters who are trained Football Association coaches. Sometimes crews carry footballs on appliances and when out in the community they may challenge youngsters to impromptu knock-abouts on waste ground, to build mutual respect and understanding.

Try Rugby

In close partnership with the Rugby Football Union (RFU), firefighters who are RFU trained coaches. Since this programme began it has helped to increase the popularity of rugby with a younger audience in local clubs.
