If I want to buy my own smoke alarms....

If I want to buy my own smoke alarms where can I get them from?

You can purchase conventional smoke alarms from most DIY stores and electrical retailers. For information on purchasing smoke alarms for deaf people please refer to that section within our website.

How many should I buy and where should I fit them?

The number you buy will depend on your particular circumstances. Fires can start anywhere in the home, so the more you fit the better protected you will be.

For maximum protection an alarm should be fitted in every room (except the kitchen, bathroom and garage, as these rooms are normally affected by fumes and steam, and will constantly produce false alarms).

If you are prepared to spend money on installing a mains powered system, then even better. Clearly these choices are not realistic for most of us so, like all the other Fire Brigades in the country, we recommend a minimum standard.

Remember - smoke alarms are there to give  early warning of a fire so that you or your family can escape from the home by the normal route: this means via the landing, stairs and hallway to the front door.

Finally - If you have any doubts about where to fit a smoke alarm please do not hesitate to contact us on 01429 872311 and we can advise you on the best places to put them. Alternatively you can always request a free home fire safety visit and we can fit them for you absolutely free.
