How should I look after my smoke alarm?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions - smoke alarms need very little maintenance. Just a few minutes a week will ensure your alarms are always ready to help save the lives of you and your family.

Once a week:

  • Check the alarm by pressing the test button. Test it before a fire tests it for you.

Once a year:

  • Replace the battery - choose a significant date to help remind you ie a birthday (Note: this is not necessary with the 10 year long-life battery alarms)

  • Vacuum and wipe the casing and slots, to avoid a build up of dust, which could block the sensor (switch off mains powered alarms first).
