National Chip Week - Ban the pan

Every year in the UK there are over 8000 fires, 3000 injuries and 30 deaths nationally can be put down to chip pan fires, and there is simply no need for it.

Our aim is to ban the pan. So if you still have a chip pan or know someone who has, please call us and we will call round and collect it.

Chip pan fires

Old fashioned style chip pans are becoming a thing of the past as people are buyng modern thermostatically controlled, sealed fryers, or are eating oven chips, which are a great alternative to home produced chips.

Unfortunately chip pan fires do still occur and can have a devastating effect.

The three main causes of chip pan fires are:

  • oil or fat overheats and catches fire spontaneously

  • oil or fat is filled too high and spills over onto the cooker

  • chips are put in wet causing the oil to bubble up and overflow

Follw five simple guidelines to keep your kitchen safe:

  • never fill the pan more than a third full of oil/fat

  • test the temperature of the oil/fat by putting in a small piece of bread; if it crisps up quickly, the oil is ready

  • if the oil/fat is giving off smoke it is too hot. Turn it off and let it cool down before starting again

  • dry the chips before putting them in the pan

  • do not leave the pan unattended
