OVER 700 elderly and vulnerable people across Redcar and Cleveland will receive a vital lifeline community alarm service following a unique new deal between Cleveland Fire Brigade’s trading company and Redcar and Cleveland Council.
New alarms will replace existing equipment in properties of residents who currently receive ‘Telecare’ packages, which offer support – such as fall sensors – to vulnerable residents. The deal will also see the Fire Brigade’s community interest company provide a community alarm service for the borough and local residents on the scheme will also receive a free annual Home Fire Safety Visit.
This ground-breaking contract will commence on Monday 1 October and means Cleveland will be the first fire and rescue service in the UK to offer an arrangement by which any calls from people using the alarms are handled by the Brigade, with professionally qualified social care workers subsequently despatched to respond swiftly to emergencies.
Fifteen per cent of all income from this contract will also be reinvested in local projects through the Brigade’s Community Interest Company (CIC).

Our professional value for money service will strengthen the protection we provide and we are proud to expand our services to the people of Cleveland.”
Redcar and Cleveland Council will shortly be writing to all residents assessed as having a social care need explaining the new situation and contact details with the Fire Brigade.
This is the latest contract won by Cleveland Fire Brigade through their new community interest company – a social business that redirects any profits generated back into achieving a positive impact for local communities. The Brigade hopes their bold new approach will not only bring direct benefits to local people, but help protect the local services delivered by the Brigade from the kind of deep cuts currently hitting the wider public sector.
