Brigade to take part in Fire Engine Rally

CLEVELAND Fire Brigade will be taking centre stage at one of the country’s oldest fire engine rally’s next weekend (25/26 June).

The Annual Fire Engine and Vintage Vehicle Rally returns to Preston Park, Eaglescliffe for two days of action-packed fun for all the family.

At the event, firefighters from the Brigade will be carrying out a simulated road traffic rescue demonstration in the main arena on both days and giving out fire safety advice, including how people can arrange a free Home Fire Safety Visit.

Steve Owens, Station Manager for Thornaby and Yarm Fire Stations, said: “Everyone at the Brigade is really looking forward to the event which presents us with a great opportunity to get our key safety messages across to the people of Cleveland and beyond.”

“We are expecting to have a wide range of fire appliances on display including the Brigade’s Water Rescue Unit, an emergency tender, a hydraulic platform and other specialist appliances. We are also taking along our portable sports arena which is always popular with young people at outdoor events like this.”

Organised by serving and retired fire personnel, the event is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. It was originally held at Teesside Airport (now Durham/Tees Valley Airport) but moved to Preston Park in 1989. Stockton Borough Council supports the event.

Brett Clayton, one of the organisers, said: “It’s great to receive the support from local fire and rescue services. In addition to Cleveland Fire Brigade, we also have a fire and rescue presence from Durham and Darlington, North Yorkshire and Northumberland.”

As well as modern and vintage fire appliances, there will also be a selection of vintage cars, military and commercial vehicles and farm machinery. Other attractions include fire fighting displays, the James Dylan Stunt World, Haurel and Lardy comedy duo, a fun fair, crafts, trade stands, Fireman Sam and Blaze Bear.

The event is held from 10am to 5pm on both days with the main arena attractions starting at 12noon. Admission is £3.50 for adults and £2.50 for children/concessions.

All the proceeds from the event will go towards the Fire Service Benevolent Fund and Great North Air Ambulance.
